Story behind Guru Poornima

On the full moon Day of the Ashadha Month, Guru Poornima is celebrated in the memory of Sage Maharishi Veda Vyasa, who edited the 4 Hindu Vedas, wrote the Mahabharata, 18 Puranas and also the Srimad Bhagwatam. He was also the preacher of Dattatreya, the great Guru of all Gurus.

Significance of Guru Poornima

On the day of Guru Poornima, devotees and all spiritual followers worship Maharishi Vyasa or other respective gurus by performing pooja and taking their blessings. People visit temples and take the blessings of Gods.

This day, also holds great importance for farmers who pray for rains and better crops. People also begin spiritual lessons on this day, sue to its auspiciousness.

Celebrating Guru Poornima

People celebrate this day by worshipping their Guru, chanting mantras and seeking advice from the Guru.

Some people also fast the entire day, and eat only after taking blessings from their Guru. Few also spend the entire day reading the vedic books of their Guru’s, and following their teachings. Some also give gifts to their guru, in the form of spiritual Dakshina or Donations.

The main aim of celebrating this day is to remember your Guru and his teachings which will help you achieve greater success in life and become a better person.
