Ever wondered how many Bollywood beauties like Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor and Katrina Kaif look flawless and stunning every time you see them? The talented hand behind their picture-perfect appearance is the Master of Make-Up and India’s Award Winning celebrity makeup artist and hair stylist, Marvie Ann Beck. With over 20 years of experience, Marvie has worked with them all. She is also the only Indian Makeup artist to have worked with two Oscar Winning Actresses such as Hilary Swank and Cate Blanchett.

At a young age of 3 years, she started drawing and painting and was always very fascinated with all kinds of colors, textures and paintings. According to Marvie, it was a combination of productiveness and being born with an inner talent that already existed. She learned classical ballet under the wings of her mother and would accompany her to rehearsals and shows.

Over the years Marvie tried her hand at various other jobs and interests before embarking on her journey as a make-up artist. Being a go-getter and an ambitious woman that she is, Marvie decided to take a step further in pursuing make-up. She was always inspired by the work by London based artist, Penny Delamar. With the support of her parents to take her passion for make-up to the next level, she enrolled herself for a short course in make-up at The Delamare School of Make-Up in London. The course gave her an adrenaline push which helped in opening up her creative and artistic viewpoints to international standards. On completion of the course, she returned to Mumbai with full gusto, bearing in mind the new found knowledge she earned which ultimately drew a bigger picture for her as to what make-up is.

For the next seven to eight years, Marvie engaged herself into her work, gaining work for commercials to shoots, fashion shows, events etc. Her first big assignment came about when a friend of hers, who was a co-coordinator for advertisementsback then, invited her as a make-up artist for a test shoot for Nivea. Since the unit did not have a hair stylist on location, Marvie, who was as talented in hair styling as in make-up obliged and did the trial for both, hair and make-up. Post the Nivea campaign, she received many offers and worked on various other projects.

In a male dominated industry, where female make-up artists were seldom called upon, she managed to make her mark in the industry and it was no sooner due to her excellent work and professionalism that she was frequently called by actors and actresses alike, for specialized songs or scenes to work her magic on them. She even travelled abroad on special request with them.

Marvie has worked on over 6,000 faces in her 20 years as a make-up artist.  Upon gaining the experience in the field of make-up, she did not limit herself to just this space. She worked on board with Jet Airways as a grooming and make-up expert and also conducted workshops for the same. As a skin expert, she was contributory in schooling staff at salons and academy’s like Bblunt, Juice, Naturals and Nalini&Yasmin. This developed into an idea to become an entrepreneur and eventually she opened her own academy.

Salon and Academy –

After years of working in the ad and film industry, tending to celebrities and other clients, Marvie now runs her own academy and salon, The Marvie Ann Beck Make-Up and hair Academy, where she trains enthusiastic and budding make-up artists and imparts in them the tricks of the trade with élan and prepares them to work with top celebrities and fashionistas. The Academy is not only attended by Indian students but also by students from Germany, Dubai, Philippines and Spain. As a product specialist, Marvie also works with with big brands like M.A.C, Lakmé, Lancôme, Estee Lauder, Bourjois Paris, Inglot and Chambor.

Marvie brings out the best in fashion, hairstyling and make-up, for which she is famously known for her smoky eyes technique, bridal (ethnic and western) make-up, 3&4 Dimensional techniques, to name a few. She also teaches the art of special effects and air brushing at her academy. She has been responsible for the success of many of her students who have gone on to become leading make-up artists in Bollywood and have launched their careers nationally and internationally.

Marvie Ann beck doesn’t just stop at making her clients look attractive and eye-catching. She also has a sensitive side to her where she reaches out to people who are differently abled at the Helen Keller Institute for the blind, deaf and dumb. She teaches them the art of make-up with specially derived techniques to ease them off their difficulties which gives them an opportunity to make a career for themselves in the field of make-up.
