Heat Blisters : How To Naturally Treat Them?

Heat rashes usually occur when the sweat glands under the skin are blocked and the sweat is unable to reach the surface of the skin to evaporate. This causes inflammation that results into rashes which are referred to as blisters. Since these rashes tend to give that prickly itchy feeling, they are sometimes also called prickly heat.

Usually these blisters are mild and are filled with a transparent fluid or serum. In some cases, they may get infected and get filled with pus and blood. The surrounding area becomes red, itchy, inflamed and sensitive to touch. In rare cases, they affect much deeper layers of the skin and fever and chills may accompany.

These rashes can heal on their own over a period of time by avoiding heat exposure and cooling the skin. But if the symptoms become worse or last longer, one must see a doctor for necessary care.

Below are the top five, simple home remedies to give you instant relief for these rashes:

  1. Wash the blisters:

Clean the affected area with cold saline water or apple cider vinegar to rinse away the bacteria in the affected area so that the blisters do not get infected.

  1. Cool your body:

Avoid excessive heat exposure for the body to cool down. Drink enough water and juices to replenish your body. Increase fruits in your diet since they are a good source of vitamins, minerals and water, which will also boost your immunity.

  1. Apply soothing pastes on the blisters:

  1. Aloe-vera gel: Natural aloe-vera gel can be very calming to the blisters.
  2. Tea Tree Oil: Blend tea tree oil with sweet almond oil / olive oil, in 1:4 ratio and apply on the affected area with a cotton ball. This will reduce the redness, will give an antiseptic coverage and will promote healing of the blister.
  3. Whole Milk/Yogurt: Dab a cotton ball in cold whole milk/yogurt and apply on the blister. This works wonders to reduce the tingling prickly burning sensation and to reduce the redness.
  4. Tea bags (green/black): Seep the tea bags in boiling water for a minute, remove the bag and let it cool down. Place it on the blister for some time for relief in symptoms.
  5. Licorice: Make a thick paste with licorice root powder and water and apply on the affected area. You can repeat this 3-4 times a day. Licorice is antiviral in nature, is soothing on the skin and promotes healing.
  1. Cold Shower:

During summers, take frequent cold showers, use a mild soap gentle on your skin and wear light fabrics or loose-fitted clothes that allow the skin to breathe.

  1. Use Sunscreen:

Apply sunscreen to clean and dry skin about 20 to 30 minutes before leaving home. Choose a sunscreen that has SPF 15 or higher. Re-apply every 2-3 hours.

Do not puncture/pop or irritate the blisters. Use natural and safe remedies so they can heal better and if they keep worsening, seek immediate medical help. Blisters are also caused due to reasons other than heat, like cold sores or due to herpes simplex virus. Hence, it is always better to consult a physician who can diagnose your condition and give you a solution to treat it appropriately.

Remember that blisters are a way of telling you that your skin is reacting to something not right and that it needs more care and attention.

Treat it well, treat it right, naturally.
