  1. Know your fabric: Before procurement, one needs to know whether they are buying polyester, linen, cotton or velvets. Each requires a different way of looking after and their washing requirements change. For e.g. Linen becomes softer after repeated washing while velvets have to be only dry-cleaned for maintaining the sheen.
  2. Bleaching: Stay away from bleaching on natural fabrics. Though it does help to remove stains, but it has an adverse effect on the health of the fabric.
  3. Overloading the washing machine: Never overload the washing machine while washing fabrics at home. Also, use as little detergent as possible. The less chemicals one uses, the better it is.
  4. Hand wash embroidered linen: Almost always, machine wash shrinks your delicate fabrics. Wash them yourself and use as little detergent as possible.

These are some of the basic to do’s. Of course, you can always just follow the instructions on the tag of the linen you procure. But the basic know how always helps.
