8 Surprising Vaginal Facts

We all know what a vagina is and how it is a very important part in a woman’s body. But, the question here is how much do women really know about their vagina? Yes, I agree we know about the ovaries, fallopian tubes and its role in conceiving a baby and SEX! But, let’s get a bit more into the depth of it. Here are some unknown surprising facts about the Vagina, you as a woman may have never known.

Fact 1: Vagina Cleanses itself

If you have been using soaps and other cleansers to keep your vagina clean, straighten up and listen. The vagina has the ability to clean itself. The glands lining the vaginal inner wall produce fluids that keep it lubricated and also clean. Most of the vaginal infections that women conceive are self-induced or due to the use of harsh soaps to cleanse the sensitive part. These products wash away the beneficial lubricants and the healthy bacteria that reside in the vagina and give way to anaerobic bacteria that cause odor, discharge and also itching. For a precautionary measure, you may use a mild soap to cleanse the labia.

Fact 2: Arousal increases the size of Vagina

An average vagina is about 3 to 4 inches in length. Well, it may sound a bit small to accommodate your partner’s full length in it. But, this is where nature makes the right moves. The length of a vagina can actually double in its length when in an aroused condition. But, it also has its own limitations. The vagina can increase its length to only a certain extent. A woman will experience pain while having sex if the partner has a real long shaft. In such a case, simply use a good lubricant and take it easy.

Fact 3: With Age Vagina also wrinkles

As we age, a woman’s urge to have sex also decreases. Well, this is caused not just because of the body hormones but also due to shrinking of the vagina. Like our skin, the vagina also faces wrinkle problems 😉 the labia either shrinks or becomes less plump, the vulva darkens and the clitoris also shrinks as the estrogen levels in the body decreases with age.

Fact 4: Nothing gets lost in a vagina, esp tampons!

This may sound funny! Well, but there have been people who needed to rush to the hospital to get their tampons out which may have accidentally passed deep into the vagina. The vagina is surrounded by its own tissues and is not connected to anything inside. So, in such cases your doctor can easily remove the tampon using a forcep and speculum.

Fact 5: Only few women Ejaculate with orgasm

Women like men, also have the ability to ejaculate. But this happens to only a few women and comes with age, when we learn how our body reacts to sex. There are certain glands located in our body near the urethra (the tube connecting the bladder and the opening) which secrete fluids when the anterior wall of the vagina gets stimulated (more precisely the G.spot). The area is called as Female prostate.

Fact 6: Vagina changes after childbirth

After childbirth, the size of the vagina may not have changed much, but the feeling you have surely does change. A woman who has delivered a baby vaginally, gets her vagina stretched out for nine months and then more when she delivers the baby naturally. However, there are exercises that help in tightening the muscles in your vagina.

Squeeze and release the muscles to start or stop your urine flow. Hold for a few seconds and then relax. This helps the muscles become stronger and your vagina feel equally tight as prior to pregnancy.

Fact 7: Vagina Needs Sex to stay healthy or you lose it

Sex helps keep the vaginal tissues stay in good health. If you don’t take care of your vagina, the walls get fragile and in-sensitive. Later, when you hit menopause, it may also shrink a little bit. And the only way you can keep it healthy is by doing vaginal exercises as mentioned above.

Fact 8: Fluid discharge varies in every woman

The amount of vaginal discharge in a woman varies from the ovulation to periods. It also varies from woman to woman. Some women produce more discharge while others produce less and this is caused due to the variation in the mucus producing glands located in the inner lining of the vagina. When a woman suffers from a vagina infection, the production of the discharge doesn’t vary much. It is only the color of the discharge that varies.

Make sure you visit your doctor when you see greenish vaginal discharge or a fishy smell from the discharge. This may indicate STDs.
