balanced life

Happiness vs Responsibilities

We humans try to find balance in everything. A balanced diet, a balanced mind, work-life balance and balance in many other aspects. Do you wonder sometimes if your life is balanced? Asking the below questions to yourself might give you the answer.

  • Are you able to enjoy the small things or special moments of your life?
  • Can you cope with difficult situations & circumstances without going ballistic?
  • Do you always need a solid reason to be happy or you create your own happiness?
  • Do you love yourself & your social surroundings?
  • Do you know the ultimate purpose of your life?

Finding balance is really difficult as there is no set definition for it. We put a lot of effort to make things right in our life and still find ourselves in the wrong place. We are surrounded with society and responsibilities. A bread earner is always responsible to earn and help his family survive, A women is responsible to take care of the family, a good son is responsible to earn good and help his parents in their old age and a daughter is responsible to get married and keep her husband’s family happy. Today’s generation is breaking these taboo rules of the society. A women can earn and still manage to keep her family happy ( that’s balance), a man can be a bread earner and still follow his passion, a good son can take care of his parents and still have a personal life and a daughter does not actually have to marry to prove that she is a good daughter.

Finding balance means finding a mid way between your responsibilities and your happiness. Indians compromise their happiness for the sake of performing their responsibilities. This results into stress, anger, anxiety and non-fulfillment. Balanced life might seem surreal but living it is really simple. Speaking about this I remember an anecdote for the life of Shantaram (a must read book):

“The universe,” he continued, “this universe that we know, began in almost absolute simplicity, and it has been getting more complex for about fifteen billion years. In another billion years it will be still more complex than it is now. In five billion, in ten billion — it is always getting more complex. It is moving toward…something. It is moving toward some kind of ultimate complexity. We might not get there. An atom of hydrogen might not get there, or a leaf, or a man, or a planet might not get there, to that ultimate complexity. But we are all moving towards it — everything in the universe is moving towards it. And that final complexity, that thing we are all moving to, is what I choose to call God. If you don’t like that word, God, call it the Ultimate Complexity. Whatever you call it, the whole universe is moving toward it.”

We create complex situations for ourselves and loose our balance. To find the perfect balance, understand yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and socially.

Stay fit. Eat healthy. Rejuvenate. Stay emotionally in control. Take up a hobby. Find your life purpose. Express gratitude. Stay socially active. Finally Love yourself.
