Crop Malika Sadani, Founder & CEO - The Moms Co.

It’s important to look after oneself and not feel guilty about it-Malika Sadani

If the marketplace was governed, run and ruled by mothers, it would be a much nicer place today! Purely because they have the ability to turn their personal experience and empathy into fruitful products for the society.

One such mother is Malik Sadani, Founder & CEO, who started the Moms Co. after she couldn’t find a proper solution for her daughters. Despite the plethora of products shining on every supermarket shelf today, Malika couldn’t trust any brand when it came to her babies’ health.

But that didn’t stop her from giving them and thousands others the benefit of products that promised effectiveness and authentic ingredients. Here she shares with us her story, struggles and everything in between!

I grew up as an army kid travelling to a new city, making new friends every two years. Did my Engineering and MBA then joined a bank.

It came from a personal struggle of not being able to find good quality, natural & safe products for my daughters. It was during my stay in London that I got introduced to the harmful effects of chemicals used in skin care products. On moving back to India, I realised it was so hard to find great quality natural products that were safe & effective. I landed up importing products for my daughters. I spoke to over 200 moms to realise they too struggled with the same problem and depended on friends and family's travel plan to stock up on their stuff. The others who couldn't were on a constant lookout for better options for their kids. Why should something like finding a good, safe lotion or a wash be that difficult? Why wasn't there a brand looking to solve the need moms had for good quality, natural products that are safe and effective? That was when the idea to create a brand that can truly be a partner to a mom's journey into motherhood came alive.

Initially, it was getting people to align with our vision. Since we are very conscious of our product formulation and have set standards, they have to adhere to our standards and in a way that wasn’t done before. However, over the last few years, we have come a long way. People have now started believing in our vision of creating high-quality products that don’t compromise on the integrity of any ingredient or product we make. As the company evolves, so do our challenges.

In back to back meetings! As the team has grown I find myself spending time mostly with the different teams helping them align and take decisions on the way forward.

Both my venture and my daughters are young and require my undivided attention. It’s very easy to not find time for home when you are running a start-up and there is always so much to do. I have three mantras-Discipline, Routine and Prioritizing. I am lucky I have an amazing family which helps me keep these three in check. I make it a point to work out for at least an hour daily, that helps me remain energised through the day. Routines just help everyone align to the daily schedules and work better together and I have learnt to prioritize better over time, I make a point to never miss a school recital or meeting but I have also done an investor meet 3 hrs before my daughter’s birthday party.

Being an entrepreneur has made me resilient. Initially, it was difficult for me to get people to take me seriously. But we’ve come a long way in the last 3 years, from fighting people and their perceptions to getting people to imbibe the mission and ensure that it reflects in everything we do. Being an entrepreneur has also opened up many opportunities to learn on the go. From learning about the compliances to people management to marketing - it has offered me the chance to step out of my comfort zone and grow.

We are constantly looking to solve concerns that moms would face and also make it easy for them to find us which would require our products to be accessible easily. We would continue to reach out to more moms and make our presence both in online & offline stores.

We create products which I know are needed not just by me but by other moms out there but do not exist. There are many products which we have in our portfolio which are very unique - our water-resistant mineral-based sunscreen exists because moms use sunscreen in India on their kids when they go swimming. Our solution for very sensitive Eczema-prone skin or even our mosquito repellent are all developed from personal experiences. As a mom, it is also easy for me to be able to identify with other moms’ pain points and address them. When I am in the same role as the user, I understand their feedback better and that makes it easier for me to improvise my products. I constantly stay in touch with other moms and so many of them write to me with requests on products they would like us to create. We work with experts from India, Australia and Switzerland to create the safest formulations using natural ingredients which are sourced from across the world. Our entire range of products are Australia-certified toxin-free and Dermatologically tested which ensures moms can use our products without giving it a second thought.

As an entrepreneur, it is important to make your voice heard so that you can make the most of the opportunities that come your way. When in doubt, always remember why you started your journey and don’t let anyone pull you down. It’s also important to take out time to look after oneself and not feel guilty about it. My journey as an entrepreneur has taught me that while it is important to give your best every day, it is also important to feel good every day.
