Porn Banned In India: Is That a Progressive Move? I Think, Not!!!

Recently,  a petition was filed by an advocate in order to ban porn in the country which was actually denied by the Supreme Court stating that it violates the rights of individual’s freedom of privacy. However, Government of India went ahead as the department of Electronics and Information Technology has asked the Department of Telecom to order every internet service provider in the country that they have to block access to 857 URLs under the provision of Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 as the content hosted on these websites relate to morality, decency as given in Article 19(2) of the Constitution of India.

Such a move comes as a shock for most of the youth in India who elected the current government led by Narendra Modi believing that he has a vision for the future. This step from the Indian Government is now raising suspicions among the youth whether they chose the wrong leader.

Now most of you reading this article would be thinking that I am the biggest porn addict and I am not able to digest the fact that porn sites are banned in India. Whether I am an addict or not, I leave it up to you to find out. All I want to do, is guide you to the main agenda over here.

Privacy is a Democratic Right

Porn is just a subject here and if you look at it closely, this ban is actually against our right to make choices in personal lives. This ban is just another way of our government peeping into our privacy.  All this started with the ban on homosexuality which was the first time, our newly elected BJP Government sneaked into our bedrooms or private life. This Government is highly prejudiced by the youth as an authority setting guidelines for us irrespective of the fact that India is a democratic country. Democracy means that People in India should be free to make their own choices when it comes to whom to sleep with, what to eat and how to entertain.

However, there are many who are supporting this ban claiming it to be a great move to preserve our age-old culture. Yes, the same culture that created Kamasutra and temple carvings like Khajuraho. But let’s keep that debate for another time. Right now let’s focus on some of the myths circling all over the web.

#MYTH 1: Porn Instigates Rapes

Yes, you heard it right! There is this misinformation circling that watching porn can instigate a man to rape any woman. The myth doesn’t end there but it also claims that highest number of rapes registered in the U.S. is because they watch too much porn. With a population of over 120 crore, only an idiot would believe that U.S. encounters highest number of rape cases. Yes, the society over there isn’t too narrow minded or hypocritical and they are up for ensuring justice for the raped victim rather than humiliating her. Hence, women who get raped come out and file a case against the culprit so that no other women is targeted by that psycho.

Also, porn would in fact release the energy or those hormonal charge or urges that comes naturally to everyone whether its men or women. It doesn’t instigate but suppress the rape numbers in a country. According to a study, “A 10% rise in Net Access yields about a 7.3% decrease in reported rapes.” And it’s not a rocket science that porn is one of the things that is accessed over the internet.

#MYTH 2: Porn is against our culture

I wonder why anything and everything related to sex is considered as a taboo in this country. Being 2nd largest populated country of the world, it is hard to believe this fact that Sex is against our culture. Also if we look at the scriptures of Kamasutra or architectural monuments at Khajurao, again it pops up a question in my mind that where all that imagination came from.

Don’t ban porn. Ban men ogling, leering, brushing past, groping, molesting, abusing, humiliating and raping women. Ban non-consent. Not sex. – Chetan Bhagat, An Indian Author.

Porn is a visual display of sex acts which is enjoyed and explored by everyone who watch it. It’s a private affair enjoyed by people inside the four walls of their homes. It promotes sexual pleasure with fantasies and different explorations. How such acts could be against our culture when a mighty God is worshiped and considered as the most desirable among the women. Given the fact that he has more than 16,000 wives as his consort, he is world famous for his raasleelas. If you consider porn as sexual pleasure then I would suggest you to read the birth stories of each character in our Hindu mythology to educate yourself that sex is and always will be part of our culture.

#MYTH 3: Porn objectifies women

I condemn this myth. Apart from Gay videos, all other sexual acts involve men too. Also, these movies are shot with the consent of the actors as it is a full-fledge industry with professional actors and actresses voluntarily participating in the said sexual acts.

#MYTH 4: Porn exploits people

People often mix up porn with viral MMS videos of couples or individuals shot without their consent using hidden cameras and then circulated all over the world. Such viral MMS videos exploit people not porn. Instead if our Indian government tries then they could trace back to those who upload such MMS videos on to these porn websites and put them behind the bars. With the porn being banned in the country, these videos will be circulated via CDs, DVDs, or IMs over the internet which won’t be ever traceable. I am not against porn but I am definitely against such MMS videos being circulated by the porn websites.

 Conclusion

This is not about Porn being banned but it is about the Government or authorities trying to peak into our private lives. If it continues, then there may be a regulation implemented in a decade or so to spy on every single person’s bedroom without even our consent.

I understand the idea behind banning porn but it won’t work. Children will still be able to access porn through back doors or viral MMS or even YouTube. If you wish to stop your kid from watching porn then make sure you don’t buy them those Smartphones and always monitor their internet activity.

I wish my Government should build infrastructure, improve education system, produce enough food & resources for the country and provide means to offer better employment to every citizen of the country rather than going out on an unnecessary ban spree.
