Dharam Sankat Mein

Dharam Sankat Mein – Review

Dharam Sankat Mein, the title and a little glimpse of the trailer will disclose what the movie is all about. From the makers of OMG ‘Oh My God’ comes another religious satire which is also an official remake of a British Comedy ‘The Infidel’. The film is revolves around a Middle aged Gujarati Business Man (Paresh Rawal) of Ahmedabad (Amdavad) who is open minded and leads a very happy & normal life with his family whose life changes suddenly when he finds out that he was adopted.

Dharampal (Paresh Rawal) is happily going about living his life, before he discovers a secret left by his recently departed mother that he was adopted and was born to a Muslim family. The story revolves around his struggles to accept the truth of his origin and its influence on his family & life. The makers have handled this sensitive and controversial topic delicately & with a lot of care without any strong scenes or too much drama. The journey of this confused protagonist has everything drama, comedy, emotion & glamour but all of this in a very limited quantity failing to make any impact. The narrative is also slow & slightly repetitive resulting in a very limited influence on the viewers. However, there are few scenes where one cannot help but wonder how & why we are so trapped in the mind frame of stereotyping humans based on our religion. One such scene is the exchange of dialogues between Annu Kappor & Paresh Rawal when Annu sir leaves Paresh sir stranded on the highway.

All the characters are charted nicely doing justice to their roles. A special mention of Murli Sharma is required as he has once again shown that he is a versatile actor and an undervalued artist of the industry. I do not want to insult the legends like Paresh rawal, Naseeruddin Shah & Annu Kapoor by judging their performances as I am just novice. I would just like to say that Annu Kapoor & Paresh rawal brings stability to the film with their buoyant performances & Naseer sir adds the much need spark to the script despite of his limited screen time, playing flamboyant Neelanand Baba.

All in all a sensitive topic dealt in a sensitive manner. There could have been more gusto in the screenplay which would have made a strong influence on the audience, like OMG did. Due to its slow and simple script I am forced to award this movie on 2.5 stars despite a star studded cast.

PS: I am happy that Bollywood has taken a Gujarat States city & shown it beautifully. Garvi gujarati!
