Recognition to Women – Women in Maharashtra Now Granted Right To Use Their Name in Official Documents For Their Children

Maharashtra Government issued a resolution recently, stating that women in the state will now have an option to use their Father’s name instead of Husband’s name in all official documents. Additionally, Women will also have an option of using their name instead of their husband’s name in documents related to their children.

This resolution has been welcomed warmly by the women in the state and seems to be an achievement in the fight against Patriarchy. The resolution was passed in accordance with the third women’s policy 2014, and was cleared by the State Cabinet in March.

In case a woman faces issues while exercising this law, she can file a complaint to the district collector. As for the children, the resolution stated that children can now mention the names of both their parents in the documents. With this resolution passed, it seems women are now being given equal status in the society as men. This is a way of giving women an equal recognition in our highly biased society. But the question now arises is whether, this resolution will be practiced with a true spirit?
