Spiti Valley – A Land Between India and Tibet

Spiti Valley is a dessert valley located in Himachal Pradesh. The meaning of Spiti is “The Middle Land”. It is situated between Tibet and India.

It is quite interesting place with high snow-capped mountains that touch the blue skies. People considered it as the forbidden land due to its dark history. The roads, climate, beautiful landscapes and unusual small villages are surprisingly amazing. It is one of the unique travel destinations in India due the hospitality of people living in Spiti. There are some remote areas of India and a small part of Tibet too.

Spiti Valley is a cold region but few rivers like Spiti, Pin and Chandra passes through it that make gurgling sounds in night and soothe you. There are also some beautiful and eye-catching blue lakes like Chandra Taal, Nako and Dhankar. One can see very unusual clay and rock formations on the river beds. There some amazing waterfalls and glaciers too. World’s largest non-polar glacier Bara Shigri is located here.

batalOn the spiritual side, Spiti has a thousand year old Buddhist monasteries i.e. Gompas and some Tibetan art. Some monasteries like Dhankar Li, Tabo Mud, Gungri, Lidang, Sagnam, Mane Gogm amd Giu are situated in Spiti. People follow Buddhist culture and they believe chanting “Om mani padme hum” will bring fortune and wash all the sins away.

People in Spiti live in a match-box style white coloured houses. They speak only two languages – Bhoti and Hindi. The atmosphere in Spiti is very introvert type because of the isolation since long.

People living here are heard saying that they sometimes get a chance to see Snow Leopards, Ibex, Red Fox, etc. That is very rare. Fossils are found often in three villages – Kibber, Kaza and Kye. Spiti is known as Fossil Park of the world.
