91-Year Old Woman Breaks Marathon Record

Harriette Thompson now holds the record for becoming the second oldest woman to complete a marathon in 7 hours in the US history. She is 91 years old and a recovering cancer patient

She said, “Lots of times, I see young girls coming in and limping, hardly able to move and I think, well, that’s pretty good that I don’t feel that bad.”

This was Harriette’s 15th marathon in 16 years and she managed to complete the race in exactly 7 hours, 7 minutes and 42 seconds. She has been participating in the marathon since she was 76 in San Diego and said that she missed the last year’s race as she was suffering from oral cancer.

She right now is battling with skin cancer and underwent 9 radiation treatments in just 11 days. She told that just a month before the race, she underwent the last treatment and had covered the wounds with bandages and her tights.

She runs the race every year to raise the money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society. She lost her brother in February due to lymphoma. She told member station WFAE that everybody in her family died because of cancer.

Harriette Thompson is a concert pianist and she said that this quite helped her maintain pace while she was running the race. She said that sometimes she replay the pieces in her mind to maintain the pace in a race.

After completing the race, Harriette told the reporters that if she is alive and able to compete then she will run the marathon again in San Diego.
