Bollywood playback singer Ankit Tiwari (24) who rose to fame with his Aashiqui 2 track, ‘Sun Raha Hai Na Tu’ was arrested on Thursday for raping his long term girlfriend. His brother, Ankur Tiwari was also arrested for threatening the girlfriend.

The singer was arrested under rape charges after his girlfriend filed a complaint at the Versova police Station. Ankit was in a relation with the girl, an advertising professional. According to the complaint, the singer raped her on several occasions since July 2013. But she kept quite as he promised marriage to her.

Inspector Machidra Vadkhe, the inspector in charge of the case stated, “The victim had given a detailed complaint in writing in February, on the basis of which we registered an FIR in March, and after verifying all the evidence, we arrested him on Thursday.”

The girl is a divorcee who was introduced to the singer by a common friend in October 2012. Tiwari attended a party in the victim’s house in July 2013 during which he made her drink alcohol. He later raped her and when confronted by the victim, he promised to legalize the relation. He took sindoor and enacted a typical Bollywood wedding, but without any legal formalities. Later, when the girl called him to register the marriage in the nearby BMC Goregaon office, the singer remained absent.

Furthermore, the singer’s brother Ankur Tiwari allegedly threatened the girl in December 2013 at knife-point, asking her to end the relationship.

Advocate Neeraj Gupta representing the two suspects said that the allegations were not genuine and fabricated. He further said that it is his clients who are the real victims. The girl is demanding 3 crore from the singer, which when refused, the girl filed an FIR.

The Tiwari family issued a statement saying, “Ankit came to know later on that she was a divorcee and had a daughter aged 13 years. He was shocked and deeply hurt by this betrayal. Immediately, he asked that girl to end the relationship, but she started threatening him.”
