First Woman Chief Justice for Delhi HC

Delhi High Court is all set to welcome its first woman Chief Justice. The Supreme Court collegiums, headed by Chief Justice of India, P Sathasivam recommended the name of Andhra Pradesh High Court judge, Justice G Rohini for the post. The recommendation for Justice Rohini, comes at a time when women safety issues such as rape, human trafficking and other crimes are being monitored by the High Court.

Currently, out of 40 sitting judges in the Delhi High Court, only 9 are women. Justice Leila Seth, also from the Delhi High Court, was the first woman Chief Justice of a High Court. She served as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Justice Rohini, born in 1955, studied from the Osmania University, Hyderabad and later got her degree for Law from the College of Law, Andhra Pradesh University at Visakhapatnam. She served as a reporter earlier and then as the Executive Editor of Andhra Pradesh Law Journals. She was also appointed as Government Counsel for civil matters before being promoted as a High Court Judge in the year 2002. She has also served as a member of the High court Juvenile Justice Committee and has leaded the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority. In her previous tenure, she has sorted various women related issues such as girl child protection, working women, and better relationships. She has also released the Handbook on Women and Human Rights during the Indian Women Network annual day meeting. The Indian Women Network (IWN) is the initiative of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Justice G Rohini, was also a member of the Bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court that ordered the Andhra Pradesh government to appoint special officers for the District panchayati raj institutions for fixing reservations for the backward classes. At present, she is the Chairperson of Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy.
