Gulabi Gang

The Gulabi Gang Bags Awards For Their Courage

There is a saying that if a docile animal like cow is provoked beyond tolerance, it will also retaliate or fight back. When she does so, she is nothing less than an angry tigress.

The same goes for women. An epitome of love understanding and tolerance fights back, when men harass her beyond limit. It may be in self-defense or for other members of the weaker sex.

United we stand, Alone we break

The awareness that a woman fighting alone has limits and one time or the other she may fail to fight for her rights or safeguard herself from physical assault, the groups like ‘Gulabi Gang’ have manifested.

Ms Sampat Lal Devi founded the group in the year 2006. The gang is self initiated. Most of the vigilance and active members are basically from Bundelkand, which is the poorest province of Uttar Pradesh.

Sampat lal Devi, who is a mother of five, a victim of child marriage is very much aware of what a poor woman faces in society. And hence, is determined about saving the abused women, at work, at public places or within the confines of their homes. The name, Gulabi Gang is because of the rose coloured sarees that the gang mates drape.

The gang is very active in the northern region of India and raises their wooden sticks (lathis), when they find men pressuring the weak and old ladies. Many times, old and poor women, who are given some financial help, are bullied by these rogues. In such situations, the volunteers put in a lot of efforts to make the wrong doers a chance to improve, but when improvement is not seen, they give the men back a taste of their beatings.

They are inspired by the concept, “what cannot be endured must be cured”. Ladies of the pink gang are out to fight against all the wrongs done to women and weaker section. If approached, they are ready to help women get justice.

Besides, helping women to get justice, they also train woman to be economically strong. They give training to the ladies to develop their creativity. The group has been awarded for their fearless and courageous work.

This eye opener should inspire the ladies of other states to fight for justice. They should be self motivated and reliant in protecting themselves and other women.
