Legendary Actress Suchitra Sen Passes Away at 82

Suchitra Sen, the legendary actress from the golden age of Bengali cinema, is no more. She was 82 years old and was suffering from respiratory tract infection. She was moved to Kolkata’s Belle Vue Clinic on December 23 and was treated. Over last few days she had grown very weak and was completely dependent on Oxygen support for respiration.

Suchitra’s career began in 1952 with Shesh Kothai a Bengali film which was unreleased. She is also known for her roles in Hindi cinema like Devdas (1955) and Aandhi (1975). Her pair with Uttam Kumar made them the most beloved onscreen couple. Sen along with Uttam gave many hits like Sagarika, Agnipariksha, Chaowa Paowa and Harano Sur.

Suchitra was best known for her performances as psychiatric nurse with a male patient involved in Dweep Jele Jaai (1959), also her performance in Uttar Falguni (1963) cannot be left neglected; she played double role of courtesan and her lawyer daughter.

Suchitra Sen became the first Indian actress to winning Best Actress award at an international film festival in 1963’s Moscow Film Festival.

Ms Sen retired from movies and public appearances after her movie was Pronoy Pasha was flopped. She isolated herself form world to such an extent that in 2005 she refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, just because she will have to make a public appearance.

Suchitra married Dibanath Sen who belonged to one of the most well known business family of Kolkata. Sen is survived by the actress MoonMoon Sen and grand-daughters Riya Sen and Raima Sen, all three are known names in Indian Film industry.
