MWIFF Celebrates Global Women Power in India

Gearing up for celebrating yet another star studded occasion, Mumbai prepares itself this time to raise a toast to the power of women in the coming month, October. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation in collaboration with Oculus Creations is organizing the India’s First ever Women oriented Film Festival, at a time when most of the country will be enjoying the auspicious Durga Puja and Navaratri. The Mumbai Women International film festival commences on the 8th of October.

More than 70 nations are participating in this festival and out of 459 movies that have been filmed based on women lives and their struggle to make their voice heard, 180 movies will be screened within 3 weeks. Amongst all the movies featured, the best movie will be honored with the Fatma Begum Award, an honorable award named after India’s First woman film director. The theme color chosen for the gala is pink which will highlight the power of women in the world.

On the opening day of the film festival, the MWIFF committee will facilitate Indian Actress Shabana Azmi for her contribution to women based Indian films and many women empowerment programs. Her movies like Ankur, Mandi, Arth, Masoom, Mrityudand, Fire, Godmother, and 15 Park Avenue show the strong role a woman plays in today’s world. Shabana Azmi is also one of the strongest actresses to have received the National Film Award for Best Actress 5 times. She is also a renowned global icon for women power. Her presence in the festival will add glitter to its inaugural function.

Other renowned actresses, directors and dignitaries who will promote and support the 3 week festival include Zoya Akhtar, Nandita Das, Sumitra Bhave, Renuka Sahane, Reema Kagti, Seema Biswas, Leena Yadav, Nawazuddin Siddqui and Naseeruddin Shah. This star studded Mumbai Women’s International Film Festival will last for 5 days, during which women based insightful seminars, cultural programs and workshops will also be held by various artists. The fest will also be attended by several other dignitaries from all across the world.
