Divya Bharthi, do you remember the beautiful Indian film actress with that sweet voice, always smiling look and her dreadful sudden death? Today, every time we talk or Google about her death, you will only find magazine articles talking about her accidental death, a suicide or murder. But, none of these articles tell you the real story of what happened that night. Here is her untold death story first time online.

When we talk about Bollywood stars, their life, lifestyle and death, you will find the word conspiracy everywhere. This is exactly what happened to the reality of Divya’s death. Today, after nearly 2 decades of her death, the question remains the same, if she really fell off her balcony accidentally or pushed to death.

Police Investigation

The investigation was performed by Inspector J G Jadhav (Versova Police Station), Dr. Tripathy (Chief Medical Officer at the Cooper Hospital, also the person who signed her Death Certificate). Apart from these people, no one really knew the truth about Divya’s death.

Based on the conversations of these people, we have recreated the series of incidents that lead to her fatal untimely death.

The Fatal Night

Officially, that night she was home with just 3 people, her dress designer Neeta Lulla, husband Dr. Shyam (professionally a Psychiatrist) and her care-taker or maid named Amrita who had cared Divya since her birth. After the incident happened, Amrita was deeply shocked and went into acute depression. She stopped interacting with the people around her and couldn’t be questioned by the police. Soon, within 30 days of Divya’s death, amrita suffered a massive heart attack and died.

On the other hand, police also questioned 3 others who were not present at the time of the accident. They included Divya’s husband Sajid Nadiadwala, Divya’s mother Bharti and brother Kunal.

The Real Story

Location: 5th Floor, Tulsi Apartments, Versova, Andheri – West, Mumbai

Time: 11 pm

Date: 5th April 1993

Back from a shoot at Chennai, Divya was busy finalizing the deal for her new apartment in the Neptune Apartments. She visited the apartment with her broker and was very happy about her new home. She called and spoke to her brother Kunal about her joy of buying her new apartment. Kunal left home after a while for some work. That same night, she was about to fly to Hyderabad for another shoot. But, as she wanted to finalize her new apartment, she postponed her shoot. That night, Divya was roaming around her home with a bandaged foot. She had injured herself and was also in pain. She mentioned this to her producers and said she would not be able to report to her shoots that night and instead would continue the following day.

Later that night, she received a call that informed her about her meeting with Neeta Lulla and her husband who were coming to her Versova flat. Also, the flat in which she stayed didn’t belong to Divya and was registered in someone else’s name.

Loaded with work, Divya had a long outdoor shoot scheduled in Mauritius for Sajid’s new movie Andolan. Neeta Lulla was her dress designer for the movie and was meeting her that night for a discussion about her costumes.

At around 10 pm, Neeta Lulla and her husband arrived at Divya’s place. They sat and started chatting in the living room. Divya had 2 alcohol bottles on the table, a Black Label Whiskey bottle and one Mauritian Sugarcane wine. She was already been drinking from the whiskey bottle, while the wine bottle was still sealed.

Divya was talking to her maid Amrita and asked her to fry some snacks to go with the alcohol. She then moved towards a window and still continued to talk to Amrita (now in kitchen) loudly. In the meanwhile, Neeta and her husband were both watching the video player (the old VHS cassettes) and were not a part of Divya’s conversation with Amrita.

In her living room, there was no balcony. But, there was only one window which was open. Below that window, there is a parking plot. But, that night no cars were parked in it. Partially drunk, she climbed out of that window and stood on a very narrow ledge, only 12 inches wide, below it. Standing on it is nearly impossible unless you tightly hold the window’s frame. She slipped and failed to hold the window frame while turning back towards her living room. She fell from the window on the concrete floor of the parking. As she was trying to turn, she fell on the floor with a huge thud facing her upwards. By the time everyone reached her, she was lying in a pool of blood with several fractures on her skull. Still alive while on her way to the hospital, her heart rate started in falling afterwards. She was being rushed to the Cooper Hospital emergency department and died in the emergency ward.

The immediate cause of death was severe internal bleeding caused due to her injury in the head.

Why did she climb out of the window?

According to most of her close friends, Divya loved doing stunts and tried cheating death many a times. The idea of doing these stunts gave her an additional kick. There were several stories where she tried doing such similar stunts during her outdoor shoots.

Divya Bharthi, although a successful Bollywood star, she was just like another 19 year old teenager with issues like husband and a rebellious attitude against her caring parents. However, these issues were regular and did not prompt her to commit suicide. Her death was not a conspiracy, but just a very unfortunate accident that most teenagers try during their teens. She simply wanted to get high and risk her own life for fun. The only thing we learn from this incident is that we should value our lives and not try doing crazy reckless things that can harm us. You may be lucky today, but you never know when death cheats your life.
