United by Blood – Women celebrate World Menstrual Hygiene Day

In a revolutionary move, the 28th of May has been proudly announced as the World Menstrual Hygiene Day. Every year from now, this day will be celebrated by women across the world together; a celebration about their womenhood and proudly ensure menstrual hygiene in every female in the world.

Menstruation, a matter spoken with a lot of shame amongst communities in several countries is now in need of a lot of awareness. The reasons: Lack of knowledge and Hygienic menstrual pads in women. The Menstrual Hygiene Day has been announced with an aim, an aim to make every woman free from infections and diseases related to menstrual hygiene.

The need for a Menstrual Hygiene Day

The Menstrual Hygiene Day has been created to recognize the right of every woman to hygienically manage their menstrual cycles with great pride and freedom. The aim is to acknowledge and accept menstruation as a human biological process, a sign of good health. The Menstrual hygiene Day henceforth confronts all the menstruation related stigmas in the society.

28th May has been declared as the World Menstrual Hygiene Day and it will be celebrated for the first time ever in the year 2014. However, there was a lot of thought behind choosing 28th of May as the Menstrual Hygiene day. 28 is considered as the average number of days related to a menstrual cycle, 5 refers to the number of days a woman experiences her menstruation. Henceforth, the 28th of May has been chosen as the World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Aim of Celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day

The aim of celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day is simple! It aims to break the ice in the society and create awareness about menstruation, its hygiene and importance of menstruation. However, the long-term goal is to make Menstrual Hygiene Day an OFFICIAL UN day by 2020.
