Western Women And Sari – Should They Wear It or Not?

Duchess of Cornwall and Samantha Cameron need to take advice from First Lady Michelle Obama on wearing traditional Indian wear. Even the Duchess of Cambridge, who usually is known to make heads turn with her style and wardrobe, recently appeared in a not so surprising mundane red coat giving the style experts and newspapers editors nothing to talk about. The future queen appeared rather old-fashioned in comparison to the many high-profile women from across the world who usually follow eastern trends specially due to the increasing Asian influence on the Fashion industry.

On the occasion of Diwali, the Prime Minister’s wife accompanied her husband to visit the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in North-West London to celebrate this beautiful Indian festival. Samantha Cameron draped herself in a russet Silk Sari with a simple ornate jacquered-woven golden border. Draping the 7 yards traditional wear is in itself a challenge, but a regular lifestyle of millions of women in India. Mrs Cameron boldly wore the traditional textile version which would boost her political picture. The Duchess wore this borrowed sari and carried it with a lot of panache. The sari is believed to have been borrowed from a friend who was her dresser for the day. Her effort to look traditional was highly appreciated by others. It also showed how much she values other cultures, religion and their traditions. According to Sejal Saglani, most people were rather left thinking how she managed to carry the sari with such elegance.

Despite the bold decision of wearing a sari, the choice of the sari was rather gauche as compared to all other women who make a statement with their unique cultural costume. Samantha Cameron, a worthy ambassador for the British Fashion Council, is wise enough to make smart choices when it comes to fashion. But, despite her fashion intellect, she wore a regular sari to simply “Fit in” which questioned her wisdom about fashion.

On the other hand, while Mrs Cameron was visiting Neasden, the Duchess of Cornwall started her official India trip with Prince Charles wearing a graceful salwar kameez. In the British Fashion industry, both Mrs Cameron and the Duchess are two of the most clicked women for their fashion trends. Both are known widely for mimicking other cultures and their traditional wear into their wardrobe. Earlier, the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana was known for adopting the Eastern dressing trends, especially due to her close-friend Jemima Goldsmith who regularly wore salwar kameez due to her marriage to Pakistani Cricketer Imran Khan.

Similarly, First Lady Michelle Obama wore the ensemble perfectly during her Diwali celebration. She chose a silk dress designed by New-York based designer Naeem Khan of Indian origin combined with a silk-embroidered western skirt which would have looked just as graceful if worn by an Indian Maharaja. The First Lady looked absolutely at ease and blended both the cultures perfectly.
