Words Opined By Sharmila Tagore – A Leading Senior Actress

The famous ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ heroine Sharmila Tagore stated that the Indian Film industry is partial to the senior male actors. There are occasions, when roles and dialogues are created or scripted for Amitabh Bachchan, Anupum Kher and others. But the female stars of the yester years are forgotten or neglected. The senior female film stars have no place in the present cine world.

She says, “It is very common to see middle aged male superstars playing leading roles and romancing with young heroines, who are in the threshold of youth”. Let alone, being casted as leading stars in Hindi Cinema, these experienced and popular female artistes are totally neglected.

These words were voiced by the famous cine star Sharmila Tagore at a meet to talk about ‘Representation of Women in Indian Cinema and beyond’. Perhaps, there would be many senior lady film stars, who would second her opinion.

MS.Tagore finds that the current Bollywood, projects a lady in a very superficial manner. Though there are exceptions in the regional films where a woman is depicted naturally and in real fashion. The ladies and male film stars are treated at par.

Movies seem to flaunt the impression of women as a minor and ornamental manner. The roles for the senior female stars have no depth in them. She adds that even in the past, ladies acting in films had no respect or place in society.

She expresses that being married to the famous cricket player Mansoor Ali Khan made the press and public look at her from a different angle. People had to accept that lady stars can handle marriage, home and limelight efficiently. They can do justice, wherever they are.

She is of the opinion that though women empowerment is a main topic of discussion with every political party, no actual empowerment takes place. It is sad that even at a later part of the century, Indian women are not given an equal power or stand as men. They appear to be given lawful protection but the real picture is just the opposite.
