Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – The New Lifestyle Disorder?

PCOS is largely a lifestyle related disease in women of reproduction age, which is seeing a rise in India, especially among the young girls. The exact cause of the condition is not known. For long, it was considered to be a genetic disease. This syndrome mainly affects ovaries and the organs responsible for the production of eggs and female hormones. This condition runs in families. Also another cause incidence of women suffering from PCOS has doubled as it is difficult to diagnose being a spectrum of diseases without having any one particular symptom. It is approximately 3.7-22.5 % of the Indian Female population.

Age group affected is 12-45 years, it means it affects the pre-adolescents, adolescents and adults. The major cause of worry in women suffering from PCOS is Infertility. Mechanism

Common endocrine disorder cause an imbalance in the hormones produced in woman’s body. Certain women are insulin resistant, which leads to obesity in them and in turn results into hormonal imbalances and develops into PCOS.

Treatment of PCOS depends partially on the woman’s stage of life. Younger women who desire birth control pill, especially those with low androgenic (male hormone like) side effects can revert the PCOS effect by leading to regular periods and prevent the risk of uterine malignancy. The female not able to conceive because of PCOS should see an infertility constant.

Treatment For PCOS

Diet:
Fibre Refrained carbohydrates, trans fats and saturated fats. Decrease the intake of the junk food. Try to avoid food which are known to increase blood sugar levels. Limit intake of high sweet fruits. Avoid sweets, candies and chocolates. Increase intake of green leafy and brightly colored vegetables. Include protein rich food products.

Exercise:
Daily exercise improves body’s use of insulin and can help relieve symptoms of PCOS. A 30 minutes daily exercise can improve many symptoms.

– Women with PCOS cannot have children.
– Women who have had children cannot have PCOS.
– Removal of uterus cures PCOS.
– A woman must have polycystic ovaries to be diagnosed with PCOS.
– A woman who has polycystic ovaries has PCOS.
– There will be no problems after menopause.
– If a woman do not want to have a child (or more children ), she do not have to worry about PCOS management.
– If a woman passes a glucose tolerance test, she doesn’t have PCOS.
