The fact that more than twenty out of hundred ladies don’t believe their breast cancer is shocking, but true. The reasons for the disbelief are many. The foremost reason is the absence of any family history. In spite of the in depth evaluations provided by various medical institutions; women refuse to accept the breast cancer risk factor.

These ladies are not affected by the number of facts offered. They just choose to ignore the cancer causing facts like:

• Early puberty and monthly cycles
• No childbearing experiences (cannot conceive)
• Having direct relations like a mother or sister having breast cancer

They feel that their healthy lifestyle would keep breast cancer at bay.

Many of the writers in medical journals feel that this disbelief would be disadvantageous; it would only stop them from taking the preventive measures to keep breast cancer away. In addition to the above mentioned aspects there are a few ladies, who felt so in their bones (gut feeling). Many feel that the negative results of their ‘pap smears’ are additional reasons to disbelieve the breast cancer risks. Perhaps these ladies forget that pap smears are tests for cancer of the cervix.

Yet, another reason for the disbelief is the thought that breast cancer manifests as a swelling or bulge; whereas this cancerous manifestation can appear in any form. In most cases, the initial appearance can mislead the findings.

Many, from the fair sex feel that unless their direct relations from the mother’s side have been affected by breast cancer they need not worry. Research and studies quote that the paternal side cancer history should also be considered. The reason for this statement is the fact that half of our genetic aspects are inherited from our patriarchs.

Moreover, there are many cases where there are no family histories of breast cancer from either side of the family.

Considering all the facts, it is important for ladies both young and the middle aged to know and understand the breast cancer risks. This will help them to take timely preventive measures and be assured that they are safe from this killer disease.
